Why Data Visualization?

Data Visualization tools allow you to take large amounts of text, and make create meaning from it. Data Visualization tools can often help you tell your research stories more effectively. When used appropriately data visualization tools and techniques can help make your information easier to understand. Multiple tools are used throughout this workshop in order to expand your Data visualization and mapping skill sets.

Learning objectives

Participants will be able to do the following by the end of this workshop:

  1. Be aware of why “cleaning” data is necessary & clean it a Google Sheet or Excel Spreadsheet.
  2. Create a Google Sheets visualizations
  3. Find open data online (e.g. City of Seattle, City of Victoria)
  4. Create a Google Map using open data
  5. Create a story based multimedia map using Storymap JS
  6. Create a timeline multimedia narrative using Timeline JS
  7. Create a customized Word Cloud
