Let's talk about tax literacy and why it matters in Canada and BC In-Person

This workshop introduces the concept of tax literacy and illustrates how tax literacy can improve our understanding of taxes, rights and responsibilities, as well as the impact that taxes have on our well-being. 

Facilitators:

  • Esteban Vallejo Toledo / 'stɛbən və'dʒɛhɔ tɔ'lɛdɔ, PhD Student at UVic Law. His research explores the relationship between taxation, urban development, and spatial inequality in Vancouver. He will focus on how tax literacy can improve people’s understanding of municipal, provincial, and federal taxes, especially in BC. 
  • David Boudinot, Government Information Librarian at UVic Libraries. He will speak on where different types of taxation information can be found, and explore government taxation and revenue reports. 

Objectives:

  • Understanding of Essential Concepts about Taxation and Tax Literacy: raise awareness of why essential knowledge about taxes improves our skills, increases our confidence to make responsible tax decisions, and furthers access to justice.
  • Understanding of Key Taxes: help participants learn about essential aspects of important taxes in Canada, especially in BC.
  • Understanding of Legal Rights and Responsibilities: explore what rights people have when interacting with federal, provincial, and municipal tax authorities.
  • Understanding Existing Resources: explore different tools and resources that academic and public libraries can provide to people in order to further their understanding of taxes and fiscal policy.

 

This workshop is organized with support from the Law Commission of Canada Emerging Scholars Program.
