Gathering Colour: Making Pigments with Artist Caitlin ffrench In-Person
Pigments surround us in many forms. Gathering colour to work with in your art practice is a way of collaborating with the natural world. In this workshop you will learn the health, safety, ethics, and hands on skills to work with wild-gathered ochre (mineral pigments). We will be creating watercolour paints with wild-gathered and historical pigments, while also discussing how to work with mineral pigments to make oil paints, ceramic underglazes, and other artist materials. We will discuss other natural artist materials that can be made, and talk about the history and magic of colours.
Caitlin ffrench is an artist, author, and educator who works with wild-gathered mineral and plant pigments from within the landbases she visits. ffrench works with wildcrafted pigments as a way to find the connections between place and memory. Her work explores parallels between her grief for the loss of landscapes and her grief for her body being disabled by multiple sclerosis.
