The Literature Review for Graduate Students

The Literature Review for Graduate Students In-Person

A well crafted literature review forms a crucial piece of our academic research and writing processes, serving as the contextual foundation for a rigorous study. Have you ever had to do a literature review as part of an assignment, without having a firm grasp on what the purpose of it is?

While the name "literature review" is widely used in academia, it is often used inconsistently or confused altogether with a literature search. This workshop will focus on the type of literature review most commonly created in student essays, theses, and dissertations, the Narrative Review.

Join academic experts from UVic Libraries and the Centre for Academic Communication to gain a clear grasp on the purposes, uses, structure, and benefits of this key aspect of sharing and situating your academic work.

In this workshop, participants will engage in critical discussions to surface how best to create and situate a literature review for their own academic purposes.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, students will:

1. understand the purposes of a literature review

2. consider the key steps in creating an effective literature review

3. be able to incorporate best practices for framing their own literature review

4. be familiar with how to incorporate a literature review into their own work
