Printing in the Present Tense

Printing in the Present Tense Online

We are living in a stressful time: a global pandemic, massive social change, and a pivotal election season in the U.S. Ben Blount, a graphic designer and letterpress printer, is finding that the more we’re separated—physically, politically, and ideologically—the more he is seeking to make a connection with people and engage in conversation through his artistic practice. Blount believes print can be a powerful medium during this time of change. In this talk Blount will discuss how the printed word can have impact beyond the page.

Ben Blount is a Detroit-born graphic designer and letterpress printer. He loves books, type, and putting ink on paper. His work often explores questions of race and identity and the stories we tell ourselves about living in America. A believer in the power of the printed word, Blount uses wood and metal type to create work that has impact beyond the printed page. He learned a lot about design at Washington University in St. Louis, a lot about printing at Columbia College Chicago, and filled in the gaps with mentors and lots of practice. He prints out of MAKE, his storefront studio in Evanston, IL.
