Testing Chronicles: Gamified, Story Driven Open Education for Software Engineering In-Person
Help us celebrate Open Education Week with a showcase of Testing Chronicles, a new Open Educational Resource (OER) for SENG 275 that uses comics, gamification, and visual storytelling to make software testing concepts engaging, inclusive, accessible, and freely available to students.

The project places strong emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion, featuring diverse characters and storylines, culturally aware examples, and thoughtful design choices that reflect a wide range of learner identities and experiences. Accessibility is integrated throughout the resource—from alt text and clear visual layouts to text‑to‑audio functionality—ensuring that the material supports a variety of learning needs. The project also includes multilingual translations (including French, German, and Lekwungen), expanding access and supporting a broader community of learners.
This initiative is supported through UVic Libraries’ ongoing commitment to open education. Library staff have provided guidance on open licensing, publishing pathways, and inclusive design as part of broader efforts to advance open, student‑centered learning at UVic.

Statement of AI use:
The comics were designed to teach complex engineering concepts to SENG, CS, and ECE students, emphasizing clear and engaging storytelling rather than artistic detail. Visual artwork was produced using the help of generative AI, while all pedagogical content was authored by the course's teaching team.
