Practical Data Skills Workshop Series

Gain foundational research and data skills through short, 30-minute interactive lessons. Each session is a stand-alone introductory workshop, so feel free to drop in for the topics most relevant to you or attend the full series. The series runs weekly during the first two months of fall and spring terms.

What You’ll Learn

This series teaches practical skills that support Open Science (also known as Open Scholarship), a broad movement to make research across disciplines more transparent, accessible, and collaborative. Open Science is about more than just making research openly available, it's about transforming how that knowledge is produced.

All workshop materials are openly available on the UVic Libraries Open Science guide. 

Who It's For

Designed for students, researchers, and campus staff looking to strengthen their skills. No prior experience required.

Workshop Topics Include

• Organizing Your Citation Library –Learn how to manage references and citations efficiently so your research stays organized and easy to retrieve.
  James Clay, Postdoctoral Research Fellow and University of Victoria instructor, will lead this session.
   
  
• Creative Commons Licensing – Learn how to apply Creative Commons licenses to your own work and how to find, understand, and properly attribute CC-licensed works you want to reuse
• Data Privacy 101 – Build responsible research habits by learning the basics of working with sensitive data.
• Editing Wikipedia - Learn how to make edits and add content, helping build a more open and reliable source of knowledge for everyone.
• Find Open Data – Explore methods for locating and using open datasets.
• Markdown – Learn the lightweight formatting language behind READMEs, notes, and documentation, in this hands-on introduction to writing clean, portable text.
• Organize Files and Folders – Learn how to keep your files tidy and easy to navigate.
• Pre-Register Your Study – Learn how and why pre-registering your study with OSF Registries increases the transparency and credibility of your research.
